when battling, update please

Q.) I am unsure about the condition to be meet to have a spirits being «battling» i'm playing a "brillance"-effect deck and i wanted to know if the spirit had to be engaged with another spirit to be «battling» to have it's effect to occur.

A.) When Battles = When Attacks + When Blocks.

as beginner i want a more detailed info please, so i get it correct. does this mean that there must not even be an opposing spirit in the "when attacks" regard???

I don't really understand your question but, there are multiple types of "When Attacks" effects. One, instance effects. These effects are mainly pretty straight forward, ie: Destroy target opponent's spirit with BP4000 or less. These effects activate once you declare the attack, before the first "Flash Timing". If multiple effects are activated at this time, you choose the order that they will be activated.

Next, the conditional effects. These effects are activated when a condition is met, ie: When you use a magic card, draw 1 card from your deck.

Last but not least, the passive effects. These effects are active while the spirit is still attacking. ie: Your opponent cannot activate their burst. Some effects can also be either of both of the examples above.

what did you mean by "not even be an opposing spirit"?

why??? my detail question refers to the first part of the Q&A answer "A.) When Battles = When Attacks":

Oh, well yea, the opponent's field can be totally empty. Attacking the Life is also a "battle".

bc sometimes games can be similar, different, and wordings can be confusing. i collect(ed) 12 tcg games, and same wording can mean something different sometimes. so "when battling" cna mean truly totally different things. for example in other game it requires an opposing monster to "be in battle directly with my monster" and so on, that was confusing me here in BS;-)
